Michael J. Hartley

Mr. Hartley graduated cum laude and order of the coif from Boston College Law School, where he was an editor of the law review. He received his bachelor’s degree, with honors, from the University of British Columbia.

Before joining the firm, Mr. Hartley was a securities and trial practice partner in the Los Angeles office of the national law firm Alston + Bird LLP. Prior to that, Mr. Hartley was a litigation and trial partner at Weston Benshoof Rochefort Rubalcava & MacCuish LLP. Weston Benshoof merged with Alston in 2008. Mr. Hartley clerked for U.S. District Judge Paul Barbadoro, the youngest federal judge in the country at the time, following law school, and followed that with a year of appellate and Supreme Court practice with Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Tribe. He then entered large firm litigation practice in Los Angeles.

Mr. Hartley represents public and private companies and their directors and officers in a wide variety of business litigation matters, including securities litigation and investigations, shareholder and corporate control disputes, supplier disputes, civil RICO and business torts, executive employment matters, and consumer class actions. Mr. Hartley has served as lead trial counsel for numerous Fortune 500 companies and start-ups in large-scale matters ranging from trademark infringement actions, to corporate bribery allegations, to international investment fraud. Mr. Hartley also has a national insurance litigation practice and regularly defends clients in coverage litigation and bad faith matters across the country.

Mr. Hartley takes a focused approach to litigation that starts with clearly defined goals, a leanly-staffed trial team, and a targeted, well-developed game plan. He believes that smart decision-making wins cases, and that the early decisions are almost always the most important ones.
